Mother's Day Tribute

For the year 2020, Mother's Day will be May 10. I wanted to share an article by Nicole Johnson that I believe mirrors what the Bible teaches about a godly mother. It is entitled:

🔹Invisible Mother🔹
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more! Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this??

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

Some days I'm a crystal ball; 'Where's my other sock?, Where's my phone?, What's for dinner?'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history, music and literature -but now, they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England . She had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when she turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'With admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

1) No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.
2) These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.
3) They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.
4) The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A story of legend in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof. No one will ever see it', and the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does.

No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, no Cub Scout meeting, no last minute errand is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.
I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for 3 hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, he'd say, 'You're gonna love it there...'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible mothers.

10 An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
13 She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
14 She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
15 She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
18 She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
29 “Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.

The Man of Lawlessness.....what does the Bible say about him?

"Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction" (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3).

From 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 we find:

He is: "doomed to destruction" - v. 3
He will: "oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped" - v. 4
He will: "proclaim himself to be God"- v. 4

HAVE YOU SEEN HIM?
HAVE YOU HEARD HIM PREACH?
HOW CAN YOU KNOW?

HERE ARE HIS CHARACTERISTICS:

His coming: "will be in accordance with how Satan works" - v. 9
He will use: "all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie" - v. 9
He will use: "all the ways that wickedness deceives" - v. 10

YOU WILL FALL FOR HIS TACTICS BECAUSE OF ONE THING; IT DEPENDS UPON YOUR ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION: IS THERE SUCH A THING AS "ABSOLUTE" TRUTH, OR IS TRUTH "RELEVANT"?

THIS IS THE SAME THING AS ACKNOWLEDGING OR DENYING A "STANDARD OF AUTHORITY" FOR ALL RELIGIOUS PRACTICES.

What do you believe about this? Is there a universal standard of authority in religion?

Must ALL submit to it? Must ALL agree upon it?

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS T R U T H
Do you have a love for T R U T H or,
do you have a love for W I C K E D N E S S?

You will perish, depending upon which of these you love.

Wickedness deceives because: "they refused to love the truth and so be saved." - v. 10

"For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness." - vss 11-12

IS TRUTH ABSOLUTE, or RELEVANT?
"Take heed what ye hear" - Mark 4:24
"Take heed lest any man deceive you" - Mark 13:5
"Take heed lest any man deceive you" - Mark 13:9
"Take heed therefore how ye hear" - Luke 8:18
"Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness" - Luke 11:35
"Take heed, and beware of covetousness" - Luke 12:15
"Take heed that ye be not deceived" - Luke 21:8
"Take heed therefore unto yourselves" - Acts 20:28
"Take heed lest he fall" - 1 Corinthians 10:12
"Take heed to the ministry" - Colossians 4:17
"Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee" - 1 Timothy 4:16
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God" - Hebrews 3:12

What Discipleship Needs!

What words are missing from the text of Mark 10:29-30?

“…there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands; and in the world to come eternal life.”

The missing words reflect what comes TO a disciple for judging with righteous judgment. It comes FROM those who desire to live by doing what is right “IN THEIR OWN EYES” rather than what God commands. (Proverbs 14:12; Jeremiah 10:23; John 7:24).

The missing words are “WITH PERSECUTIONS”. We need to understand the significance of these two words because they are necessary to discipleship.

Here are some other passages which point out the relationship of discipleship to persecutions: John 15:20; Acts 14:22; 2 Corinthians 12:10; 2 Thessalonians 1:4; 2 Timothy 3:11-12).

The persecution that Jesus underwent was due to His doctrine [He called His teaching ‘TRUTH’] – He claimed to have authority from God to teach the things He taught (John 10:18; 12:49-50; 14:24). He taught that only obedience to truth would bring freedom from sin (John 8:32).

Persecution exists today over the same two issues – authority and truth. Those who preach a message claiming it to be TRUTH and proclaim it as the ONLY way to heaven will suffer persecution from those who do not want to acknowledge an absolute standard, but rather want to do “what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 17:6; 21:25; Deuteronomy 12:8).

Persecution is necessary to discipleship, but so is God’s authority and truth.

"WHEN TRUTH AND ERROR COLLIDE…”

Jesus stated in John 6:52-59 that He was the source of eternal life and the bread which came down from heaven. These words were spoken to the Jews, yet also heard by Jesus’ own disciples. The Jews resented the truth that He taught. But it is interesting that among His own disciples, we read, “Therefore many of His disciples when they heard this, said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can understand it?’ When Jesus knew in Himself that his disciples murmured about this, He said to them, ‘Does this offend you’?” (John 6:60-61). In John 6:66 we read, "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him."

It is sad to read that many of Jesus’ disciples “walked no more with Him” because of the things He taught. Jesus taught and did as His Father in heaven commanded Him (John 8:28; 12:49; 14:31). We are told that grace and truth came by Jesus (John 1:17). Why were some offended by what Jesus taught? Why did many of His own disciples "walk no more with Him"? Where did the fault lay......with Jesus, or with the listeners?

We find this same situation with the apostle Paul. Some among the Galatian brethren also resented the apostle Paul for preaching Christ. Yet Paul taught, wrote, and did as the Lord commanded of him (1 Corinthians 2:10-16; 4:17; 11:23; 14:37; Galatians 1:11-12; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14-15). Consider again, where did the fault lay......with Paul, or with the listeners?

From these texts in the New Testament, we can know with certainty that although the truth may be taught in love and with clarity, there will be a difference in reactions. While those outside of Christ will react differently, EVEN AMONG BRETHREN, there will be some who follow up to a point, then turn and “walk no more” with truth. Some will “gladly receive the word”, repenting from sin and being immersed in water as we find from Acts 2:38-41; 8:37-39. Some will turn a deaf ear to truth as Jesus taught in Matthew 13:14-15, You will keep on hearingbut will not understand; You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they would see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them’. Some, when cut to the heart by words of truth, will react with malice. Acts 7:54, 57-58, “…they began gnashing their teeth at him…they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse. When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him…”. Of course we know that Stephen died from this treatment (v. 60).

Jesus had pointed out these two possible reactions to truth in John 3:19-21 saying, “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
While the bearer of truth may suffer, in every situation, truth will prevail because it cannot be denied. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matthew 24:35). Resentment, animosity and fighting against the truth only reveal the flaws in those who oppose the truth. All anger against one who tells the truth is misplaced!

In like manner, every time truth and error collide, controversy will ensue. While we must not be timid when souls are at stake, every effort must be made to be kind, considerate and loving. In the end, truth must be taught and error identified. We make no claim to perfection with regard to attitudes, but insist that we are mad at no one, do not resent anyone and have no hidden agenda. We are open and willing to discuss these issues publicly and privately. We love the truth. We love the church of the Lord and we love our brethren individually. We have no desire to divide churches, alienate brethren, create confusion or inflate matters of no consequence.

But make no mistake, when error is being taught and practiced, the truth will open it to the light of examination. Error crosses congregational lines and truth must have the same right of way. Error will affect and infect all relationships of society. Therefore, all of us must be on guard. Parents are to watch out for their children. Elders are to watch on behalf of the church. Christians are to be watchful for one another. Certainly, preachers are to watch in their work as evangelists. The admonition Paul gave to the evangelist Timothy needs to be followed by evangelists today: "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” (1 Timothy 4:6-8). GOD is going to require it at our hands if we allow sin to pass into the church without raising our voice. Be assured that this is as much your responsibility as anyone else.

Adapting God's Word: Order IS Important!

The definition of 'adapt' is: "to make suitable to requirements or conditions; adjust or modify fittingly". As this term relates to God's word, two possibilities exist: adapt God's word to man, or adapt man to God's word. You may be thinking that no one in their right mind would dare to adapt or modify God's word to make it suitable to man. However, evidence from man's own writings prove otherwise.

God's word is truth (John 17:17). God's word is incorruptible seed (1 Peter 1:23). God is unchanging (Malachi 3:6). With God, there is no variation (James 1:17). The only way that this can be true, is because God's word is unchanging and without variation. In God's word we also read of two things that are said to be "immutable": God's promises and God's oaths (Hebrews 6:18). Immutable means "fixed, unalterable". Because of this we can be certain in saying that truth never changes. God gave us truth and grace through Jesus (John 1:17). We are taught by God's grace (Titus 2:11-12). This truth is found in the gospel message. The gospel message is the means by which God calls us out of sin. When we respond to His call, we are said to "call upon" Him. (Romans 1:16-17; 10:13). The Psalmist wrote, "The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth." (Psalm 145:18). The point of all this is that God has declared what truth is. Man must never adapt the conditions that truth defines.

There is that which is true and there is that which is false. There is the real and there is the imitation. In the matter of doctrine, there is soundness, and there is falsehood. We read of sound speech, sound words, and sound doctrine (Titus 2:8; 2 Timothy 2:13; Titus 2:1). God's 'doctrine' is 'sound' in that it has sense or meaning. It makes an appeal to our mind. It "calls" to our inward being, which is spirit and in God's image rather than an emotional appeal to our flesh. Any change of mind is based upon God's word rather than human emotion. While there will be an emotional effect when we understand God's truth, our emotional feelings will FOLLOW, not PRECEDE our understanding. Salvation is based upon faith, not feeling. We will KNOW whether we have been saved, because of TRUTH versus relying on an emotional FEEL about it.

But we are addressing the concept of 'adapting' as it relates to God's word. The Bible reveals that there were those who, being called of God, sought to explain what God said in His word. An example of this is found in Nehemiah 8:8, "So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading." Then there have been those who sought in their teaching to "explain" what God 'meant' by His word. Jeremiah and Ezekiel warned of those who would "speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD." (Jeremiah 23:16; Ezekiel 13:17). As a result, God is worshiped as the teachings of men so state, but not as God's word teaches. These teachings of men are not only numerous, but contradictory of each other as well as contrary to God's word. Jesus condemned this in Matthew 15:8-9, "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

It is in these teachings of men that we see the 'adapting' of God's word to man rather than the 'adapting' of man to God's word. Order is important! God's word cannot be adapted through means of legislation by men. People have come to view these "doctrines and commandments" of man as God's word. The doctrines of men are ever undergoing evolution to suit the current thinking, adapt to cultural desires or, in short, make them most appealing. As an example consider the following two quotations:

1. "No divorce, except for adultery, shall be regarded by the church as lawful; and no Minister shall solemnize marriage in any case where there is a divorced wife or husband living; but this rule shall not be applied to the innocent party to a divorce for the cause of adultery..."

2. "In view of the seriousness with which the Scriptures and the Church regard divorce, pastors may solemnize the marriage of a divorced person only when they are satisfied by careful counseling, that (1) the divorced person is sufficiently aware of the factors leading to the failure of the previous marriage, (2) the divorced person is sincerely preparing to make the proposed marriage truly Christian, and (3) sufficient time has elapsed between the divorce and the contemplated marriage for adequate preparation and counseling."

Did you note a little difference? Both are quotations from the Methodist Discipline. The difference being that the first quotation is from the 1904 edition, and the last quotation is from the 1972 edition. Neither edition is the true standard for determining faith or practice – only God's word can do that - but at least the 1904 edition far more closely represents what God's Word says in Matthew 19:9.

Why the change? Because this creed (like all other creeds) is merely the product of man and the basis of a church of man, and it is not confined to consistency. It can be altered, updated, rewritten and modified through the years. But it did not lead to salvation in 1904, 1972, or today, because it is not the Word of God, but the doctrine of men.

God never intended for the church to decide doctrine. Jesus alone, as head over the church, has that right. Those He ordained, or 'set' (1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11-13) were for the purpose of leading by example and edifying the church in the truth HE revealed. No one has authority to decide truth for themselves. Those who love God continue even to this day "in the apostles' doctrine" (Acts 2:42).

Let us heed Paul's warnings to Timothy and the churches of Christ in Galatia, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

"I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!" (Galatians 1:6-9).

Rural Bible Teaching: "Plum"- patient

'PLUM' - defined as follows:
"Not a fruit, or a color, but describing the ultimate degree in difference...".

Illustrated: this can be different from that, but if it's 'PLUM'-different, it is to the 'Nth' degree in difference.
You can be loco, but if you're "PLUM" loco, you can't exceed this in stupidity...

Synonym: "FAR-CRY. Something that is incorrect could not be any farther from the truth than to be a 'far-cry' from what is true.

Biblical usage:
Hebrews 6:12 - "so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who THROUGH FAITH AND PATIENCE inherit the promises" is 'PLUM' different than "so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who inherit the promises"...

Hebrews 6:15 - "And thus Abraham, HAVING PATIENTLY WAITED, obtained the promise" is a 'FAR-CRY' from "And thus Abraham, obtained the promise..."

It is no wonder the Lord taught: "In your patience, ye possess your soul..." (Luke 21:19).

Being patient is a "FAR-CRY" and "PLUM" different from being idle when working out our own salvation (Philippians 2:12). In your patience, seek to "strengthen your heart" lest you "learn to be idle". (James 5:8; 1 Timothy 5:13).

The "ELECT"

God chose before the creation to save man in a certain way…through Christ - Ephesians 1:3-5 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places IN CHRIST: According as he hath chosen us IN HIM before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children BY JESUS CHRIST to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will..."

Those saved are called “the elect” in 1 Peter 1:2. The term ‘elect’ has reference to being ‘chosen beforehand’.

Remember that in Ephesians 1:4 that salvation was to be in Christ – “…he chose us IN HIM before the foundation of the world.”

Accordingly, we are told in 1 Peter 1:18-20 that Christ was foreordained; foreordained to redeem man.

Peter reminded the “elect” of this as follows: "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world…"

These prophets in the O. T. foretold of a day and time of when this great feat would be accomplished and the glories associated with being redeemed by the One whom God had foreordained to suffer and die--Christ. They were not serving themselves, but were servants of God to prophesy or ‘forth-tell’ this eternal purpose of God to provide salvation through His Son. God used prophets to make known to others this eternal purpose.

Accordingly, Amos wrote in Amos 3:7 - “…the Lord GOD… revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

"Hear, O my people...Israel, if you would but listen to me!

Close their ears to the truth – Jeremiah 6:10; Luke 8:8; 2 Timothy 4:3,4; Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6 Follow what is popular – Jeremiah 6:13; Micah 3:11; 2 Timothy 4:3; Jeremiah 6:14; John 6:60,66

Jeremiah explained why God's people of his day had trouble understanding God's message to them:
6:10 - "...behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it."

As a result:
7:24 - But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
7:26 - Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.

GOD had told their fathers:
Psalm 81:8-11 - "Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. BUT MY PEOPLE DID NOT LISTEN TO MY VOICE; ISRAEL WOULD NOT SUBMIT TO ME."

THE APOSTLE PAUL LIKEWISE STATED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE PEOPLE OF HIS DAY:
2 Thessalonians 2:10 - they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

What is your attitude toward God's word about:
Mark 16:16
Acts 2:38
Acts 22:16
1 Peter 3:21

HOW READEST THOU?

It is one thing to read the Bible through,
another thing to read to learn and do.
Some read it with design to learn to read,
but to the subject pay but little heed.
Some read it as their duty once a week,
but no instruction from the Bible seek.
While others read it with but little care,
with no regard to how they read, nor where.
Some read to bring themselves into repute,
by showing others how they can dispute.
While others read it for the wonders that are there–
how David killed a lion and bear.
While others read it with uncommon care,
hoping to find some contradiction there.
Some read it as if it did not speak to them,
But to the people at Jerusalem.
One reads with father’s specks upon his head,
and sees the things just as his father said.
Some read to prove a pre-adopted creed,
hence understood but little that they read;
For every passage in the book they bend,
to make it suit that all-important end.
Some people read, as I have often thought,
to teach the book instead of being taught.
Tho’ some there are who read out of spite,
I fear there are but few who read it right.
But read it prayerfully, and you will see,
although men contradict, God’s words agree.
For what the early Bible prophets wrote,
we find that Christ and his apostle’s quote.
So trust no creed that trembles to recall
what has been penned by one and verified by all.

AS THE MANNER OF "SOME" IS

We read in Nehemiah 8:13 - "On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the law."
Wonder what technique Ezra used to get the people to "come together"...a hot dog; a $5 bill; or did they know ahead of time WHY they would be assembling; did Ezra keep this a secret? Does it really take 'stomach' feeding first, then slip in a little 'soul' feeding?
Don't seek Jesus for the wrong reasons! SOME did!

John 6:26-27 - "Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you'."

Isaiah 55:1-3 - “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live..."

Matthew 5:6 - “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

John 7:17 - "If any man's will is to do His will; he shall know of the doctrine..."

BEFORE and AFTER

AFTER JESUS’ RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION:
When Peter and John taught, the Jews “…were astonished at the confidence with which they taught and recognized that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13)

BEFORE JESUS’ RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION:
Following Jesus’ arrest, Peter followed ‘afar off’, and one of the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.” — Matthew 26:73

In both instances, Peter’s speech associated him as having been with Jesus.
In both instances, we see ‘boldness’ in Peter’s speech.
Yet, there is a glaring difference…FEAR OF DEATH. Note a change in Peter’s fear of dying…what prompted it?

Notice the change in Peter’s own reaction to his speech.
In the “BEFORE” instance, Peter “…went out and wept bitterly.” (Matt. 26:75) Why?

In the “AFTER” instance, when threatened, Peter rejoiced that he “… had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name…and…kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” (Acts 5:41-42)
What about those whose speech associate them as ‘having been with Jesus’? Does your FEAR OF DEATH, dictate your speech?
How can a change in your fear of dying take place? It will be the same as with Peter.
He said, “…we must OBEY God…God of our fathers raised up Jesus…He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given TO THOSE WHO OBEY HIM.” (Acts 5:29-32)

Betraying Yourself

BY THY WORDS THOU SHALT BE JUSTIFIED OR CONDEMNED.

Matthew 12:37 – “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

When Pilate was minded to release Jesus, the Jews said, "HIS BLOOD BE UPON US." (Matt. 27:25)

Yet, after Jesus had been crucified, and the apostles began teaching that He had been raised from the dead, the Jews were outraged, saying, “We strictly charged you NOT to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, AND YOU INTEND TO BRING THIS MAN'S BLOOD UPON US.” (Acts 5:28)

Strange that they would accuse the apostles of intending to do the very thing that they had demanded earlier. Such behavior is in line with the wicked, for they contradict, lie, and falsely accuse, when their wicked intentions and deeds are exposed by “the light” (i.e., truth) – John 3:19 et al.

Truly, their speech BETRAYED them!

Evangelism: an asset or a liability?

When we speak of the gospel, we are speaking of evangelism. Evangelism is the work of proclaiming the gospel. There is the need for evangelists in this work, but there are many other needs essential to the support of evangelism. The Philippian church supported Paul and had fellowship in the gospel. (Philippians 1:5; 4:15-16). Timothy and Epaphroditus were fellow-workers in this matter of evangelism (Philippians 2:19-30).

Evangelism is needed, because the gospel is needed. God’s power to save and His righteousness are in the gospel (Romans 1:16-17). In Philippians 3:9, Paul spoke of “…righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith”. When we pair this with what Paul said in Romans 1:17, we find that:
~ Righteousness comes from God.
~ God’s righteousness has always been revealed through His word.

Because God’s words are inherently right, all that is truth originates with God. There is nothing true but what God declared to be true. God intended for His words to be known by man and for that reason evangelism is necessary. Evangelism is the work of sharing the gospel.

We also learn from Philippians 3:9 that righteousness comes from God on the basis of faith. It was so purposed. God’s word must be believed and accepted as being true. Otherwise, no one will be righteous before God. This may be better understood when explained from another aspect. To say that God’s word must be believed and accepted as true and right, it must be believed and accepted that nothing else is true and right. God’s words have no equal; no peer! Our faith regarding God’s words must be that they alone are the sole source of truth and right.

Righteousness therefore depends upon a right understanding about what the sole source of truth and right is. Righteousness has but one true source. Do we believe that? If so, we will act as God’s word directs. We will accept it ‘by faith’. Since God’s righteousness is now found in the gospel, if we believe the gospel message we will do as it states. Then and only then will we be righteous in God’s sight. This is the promise He has given in His word. Do we believe it?

Since God’s power to save is in the gospel, and evangelism is the work of proclaiming the gospel, evangelism is needed. We may acknowledge that the gospel is needed, but do we acknowledge that evangelism is needed? While evangelism is needed, evangelism has needs. It needs funding. It needs fellow-workers like Timothy and Epaphroditus. It needs time devoted and it needs commitment. Whether these abound or lack depends upon our attitude toward evangelism.

While the gospel may not be viewed as a liability, is evangelism considered so? Do we view evangelism in terms of cost-effectiveness? Are we concerned whether or not the return justifies the expense put toward evangelism? How can we determine this? Let us look to the master evangelist for the answer.

When the first disciples were called by Jesus, He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men’. (cf. Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17; Luke 5:1-11). Fishing for men refers to evangelism. How are we to view this amount of fish in comparison to the amount of men they would catch? Obviously evangelism is not going to produce the same quantity of men as the amount of fish caught here. So how are we to understand the words of Jesus? Let us consider a few truths from Jesus’ teaching:

THE SOURCE OF THE CATCH — The great amount of fish caught was not because of the ability of the fishermen. Remember they had fished all the night before and came up empty. The reason for the great catch was because it was the will of God for it to be so. Had God willed for them to come up empty, they surely would have. His word does as He purposes. God said of His word, “it shall accomplish that which I purpose…” (Isaiah 55:11). The gospel is not to be thought of only in terms of saving, but more so of revealing the heart (John 3:17-21; 15:22, 24). Only a good and honest heart will accept it (Luke 8:15). All other hearts will not. God’s word is a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). God purposed for His word to save only those who will accept it. However, evangelism is not to be graded upon convert quantity alone. Otherwise it will be deemed a failure. One has to wonder if brethren have come to measure it in this way!

THE VALUE OF THE CATCH — While the fish quantity was great, how would we compare it to the amount of lilies that God cares for; or the care God has for one sparrow (Luke 12:7)? If God so willed it, not even one hair of our head would fall (Luke 21:18).

The point is that one soul being “caught” (saved) from sin is worth more than the fish, the sparrows, or the hairs of our head being preserved. It doesn’t take a large quantity to make evangelism “cost-effective”. If one soul is rescued, evangelism is an asset. What if another is taught the same word but refuses to repent? Does their refusal make the message a liability? Has the message no value? Are we failures because no conversion results from our efforts? We need to remember this: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
